A team of cyclists from the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC) took part this weekend in an international bike ride of friendship between the Belarus city of Grodno and Lithuanian town of Druskininkai.
The 42-kilometre ride was dedicated to the 2nd European Games, scheduled for 21-30 June 2019 in Minsk, and coincided with celebrations for the 890-year anniversary of Grodno.
As a symbol of unity between nations and generations, the participants unfurled a 25-metre flag featuring the logo of the 2nd European Games inside the Grodno central sports complex during the opening ceremony. The bike ride provided a great opportunity to promote Europe’s premier multi-sport event outside of Minsk and Belarus.
The ride began at 9 a.m. and finished at the main square in Druskininkai. In addition to the Bright Team from MEGOC, participants included employees of public institutions and private enterprises.
Competitions were held in several age groups for men and women. The fastest of the 126 cyclists covered the distant in 1 hour and 4 minutes, and all participants who finished received commemorative medals.
The bike ride was organised to strengthen the already friendly relations between Belarus and Lithuania, to encourage the development of business partnerships between the countries, and to promote healthy lifestyles.
Road cycling is part of the sports program for the 2nd European Games. Two hundred and twenty-six cyclists will compete in four disciplines at Minsk 2019. At the 1st European Games in Baku, two Belarus cyclists won gold medals. Vasily Kirienko won the individual race for men and Elena Omelusik topped the road race for women.
