A commemorative plaque in honor of the start of the construction of the national stadium for beach soccer was opened today in Minsk during the celebration of the International Olympic Day.
The Minister of Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus Sergei Kovalchuk, First Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee Andrei Astashevich, Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee Andrei Shorets, CEO of Minsk European Games Organising Committee George Katulin and the chairman of Belarus’ Beach Soccer Federation Alexei Sychev symbolically began the construction of the new sports arena, which will be located on the territory of the Olympic sports complex.
Andrei Astashevich also read out a message sent by the President to the participants of the International Olympic Day and highlighted the importance of the celebration for the country.
The Minister of Sports and Tourism of Belarus Sergei Kovalchuk noted the readiness of sports facilities for the 2nd European Games. The National Beach Soccer Stadium is almost the only venue that does not function yet.
George Katulin admitted that the beginning of the construction of such a stadium is a very important event for the program of the European Games and, in general, for Minsk.
-Beach soccer has recently become one of the most dynamic sports. The national team of Belarus is among the European leaders and competes with such teams as Spain, Portugal, Italy, Russia, and others. The stadium itself will be a good promotion for this sport.
BSF chairman Alexei Sychev said that the future arena will have a capacity of 1,500 seats and will meet international standards.
-The requirements towards the future stadium were agreed with the International Beach Soccer Federation. All their suggestions were taken into account. The arena will have an original look in the form of a horseshoe, which will allow sports fans to truly enjoy the game. In my opinion, the sports venue should positively influence the results of our team’s performance.
According to Mr.Sychev it is planned to audit the new arena for hosting the Euroleague stage of beach soccer by July 15, 2018. It will be a test event before the 2nd European Games.
Belarus team was automatically qualified to the beach soccer tournament as a representative of the host country. The remaining seven teams will be selected according to the performance at the stages, as well as in the Euroleague Superfinal in June-September 2018.
Olympic Sports Complex will host archery and beach soccer competition in 2019 during the 2nd European Games.
