Navahrudak

Navahrudak (also spelled Novogrudok) was the first capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the place where the wedding ceremony of Sophia of Halshany and Władysław II Jagiełło was held, and an unceasing source of inspiration for Adam Mickiewicz.

Navahrudak castle is a unique example of defensive architecture of the times when statehood was being established in these lands. Be sure to visit the Transfiguration Cathedral. It was here that the wedding ceremony of Sophia of Halshany and Władysław II Jagiełło took place, and Adam Mickiewicz was baptised.  The cathedral was originally built by Grand Duke Vytautas and is considered one of the most ancient ones in Belarus. Take a walk around the town's main square. It features authentic old buildings as well as three churches: the Roman Catholic Archangel Michael Church and Russian Orthodox St. Nicholas Church and St. Boris and Gleb Church, the most ancient one here. In a nearby park you will find Adam Mickiewicz House, a place to learn more about the great poet's life and works. And if you would like to know more about the real events that the film Defiance starring Daniel Craig is based on, head straight to Museum of History and Regional Studies and see the permanent exhibition on Jewish Resistance.

Svityaz, one of Belarus's most beautiful lakes, is not far from Navahrudak. Its beauty once inspired Adam Mickiewicz, so it's a must-see for all lovers of poetry - or of fascinating landscapes!
