EuroGames2019 Venues are almost completed

The sports facilities of Minsk are almost ready for the Second European Games, head of the sports and tourism department of the Minsk City Hall Sergei Furmanov told the media on 24 October, BelTA has learned.

“All the sports facilities, which are under construction, will be commissioned in time. In 2018 they will host test competitions,” noted Sergei Furmanov.

The Second European Games will take place at 11 sports facilities of the Belarusian capital, and also the rowing channel near Zaslavl. About 6,000 volunteers will help the games happen in Belarus. The competitions in 15 sports will be held on 21-30 June. Taking part in the competitions will be 4,000 athletes from 50 countries. The Belarusian capital is also expected to welcome about 2,000 coaches and support staff, official delegations, including 650 international and 410 national judges, and also about 1,000 mass media representatives.

Dinamo Stadium will host the opening ceremony of the games and also athletics events. The competitions will also be held at Minsk Arena, Chizhovka Arena, Sports Palace, Uruchye sports center, Olympiyski stadium and other sports facilities.

The European Games in Minsk will not yield to the world’s largest sports forums in terms of scale and organization, Acting President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) Janez Kocijancic told the media in the National Olympic Committee of Belarus, BelTA has learned. “The signing of the contract to hold the European Games is a historic day for Belarus and the European Olympic Committees. Ten months ago, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko accepted an offer from the EOC to hold the Second European Games in Minsk. I must say, we have made an excellent choice. Not only because Belarus did well in Baku in 2015 where it won more than 40 medals. But because your country has good infrastructure. The EOC members made sure of this already. In addition, Belarusians has strong sport traditions, know hot to organize big events. In 2014 Minsk played host to the IIHF World Championship, and passed this test with flying colors,” Janez Kocijancic said. The European Games will not yield, in scale and organization, to the world’s largest sports forums. He noted that athletes from Europe win most of the medals, for example, at the Olympics. Many leading athletes will come to Minsk in 2019 because competitions in many sports will be qualifiers for the 32nd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. Janez Kocijancic also hopes that Belarus will not yield to Azerbaijan by the number of broadcasting countries. In 2015 the competitions from Baku were broadcast in 145 countries. Belarus was chosen to host the Second European Games in 2019 after a vote at the 45th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees in Minsk in October 2016. Over 4,000 athletes are expected to take part in the competitions to be held in Minsk on 21-30 June 2019. The competition program will include 15 sports. Competitions in badminton, boxing, cycling, canoe and kayak, judo, karate, athletics, archery, shooting, table tennis will be qualifiers for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Minsk, EOC sign 2019 European Games contract

Minsk and the Executive Committee of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) have signed a contract on holding the Second European Games in 2019.

The signing ceremony took place at the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus on 1 September, BelTA has learned. The document, which includes the main principles and aspects for organizing and hosting a large-scale sport forum, was signed by Minsk Mayor Andrei Shorets and EOC acting President Janez Kocijancic, and also by Belarus’ Sports and Tourism Minister Alexander Shamko, NOC First Vice President Andrei Astashevich, head of the Directorate of the Second European Games Georgy Katulin, EOC Secretary General Raffaele Pagnozzi. The contract comprises information on ticket sales, accommodation, accreditation, opening and closing ceremonies of the Second European Games.

The competition program will include badminton, 3×3 basketball, boxing, freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling, track and road cycling, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatics, aerobics, trampoline tumbling, canoeing and kayaking, judo, karate, athletics, sambo, archery, shooting sports, table tennis, and beach soccer. 189 medals events will be held in 23 sport disciplines. Several sport disciplines will be held as qualifiers for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. These are badminton, boxing, cycling, canoeing and kayaking, judo, karate, athletics, archery, shooting, and table tennis. The competitions of the Second European Games will be held at Minsk Arena (acrobatics, aerobics, track cycling, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline), Dinamo Stadium (athletics, the opening and closing ceremonies), Chizhovka Arena (judo, karate), the Palace of Sports (sambo, freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling), the rowing canal in Zaslavl (kayak and canoe competitions), the Palace of Tennis (table tennis), Uruchye sports center (boxing), Falcon Club (badminton), Marshal Timoshenko sports center (shooting), Olympiysky Stadium (beach soccer, archery), Sporting Club (clay target shooting), Palova Arena (3×3 basketball). Belarus was chosen to host the Second European Games in 2019 after a vote at the 45th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees in Minsk in October 2016. The Belarusian capital is expected to host more than 4,000 athletes for the Second European Games. The First European Games were held in Baku, Azerbaijan on 12-28 June 2015. Belarus placed 7th with a total of 43 (ten gold, 11 silver and 22 bronze) medals.
